IPX3 testing is a procedure in the Ingress Protection (IP) rating system that assesses how well electronic devices can resist water splashes. This test measures a device’s ability to withstand water from various angles, simulating common splashing scenarios rather than direct exposure from above.
Spray Testing Details:
IPX3 involves spraying water at the device from any angle up to 60°, replicating conditions where water might splash onto it.
Test Process:
During IPX3 testing, a device is exposed to water sprayed from different angles using an oscillating tube or spray nozzle. The water flow rate is set at 10 liters per minute, with pressure ranging from 50 to 150 kPa. The test lasts at least 5 minutes or one minute per square meter of the device’s surface, whichever is longer.
Nozzle Specifications:
The spray nozzle typically has a 0.4mm diameter, positioned 1-2 meters away from the device under test.
Evaluation:
Post-test, the device is examined for signs of water penetration. It must continue to function normally to pass, demonstrating its resilience to water exposure.
IPX3 testing is critical for products intended for environments where water splashes are likely, such as outdoor electronics, handheld devices, and certain machinery. Passing this test signifies that a device offers a certain level of water resistance, ensuring its continued performance and safety even after exposure to splashes.
